CAPITULATE?

On more than one occasion, the Holy Spirit has spoken a single word into my spirit. In all instances, the word was new to my vocabulary and I had to find the meaning of the word. Such an occasion occurred recently in which I heard the word capitulate.

Capitulate means to surrender formally, usually on agreed conditions. To give in to argument or persuasion; to give up resistance: He finally capitulated and agreed to do the job my way. Thesaurus: yield, submit, surrender, give in, throw in the towel, acquiesce, succumb, relent;

On this occasion as in the past, the word given was very timely and supplied the needed answer to an immediate need. I had, a few days prior to receiving this word capitulate, been given by the Holy Spirit a renewal call on an old ministry mandate dating back to 1991. The renewal call wrought great anguish over how to facilitate this renewed mandate. In fact it was in the early morning of my third consecutive sleepless night that I heard the word capitulate.

ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE

It is obvious that the Spirit of God was emphatically saying that facilitation of this calling or renewed mandate will happen only when I capitulate. Surrendering is not one of my distinguishing traits!

Let's go back to the third day (Resurrection day). After not sleeping but a few hours each night for three days, I decided that on the third day that I would seek the Lord concerning my renewed mandate, until I got my answer. Immediately following this decision to seek God on the third day is when I heard the word capitulate.

CAPITULATE! WHO ME?

SIMPLE MESSAGE - GALE PLEASE SURRENDER! SURRENDER WHAT?

My first reaction to hearing this word was anger and frustration. I immediately began to bring my good works and past surrendering attributes before the Lord. I was asking questions like, "What is it Lord that I have not surrendered to you?" I asked, "Lord, I have given almost one quarter of a century serving you to the best of my ability, so what is it that you are requiring now?"

After a short time of meditation, the Holy Spirit began to reveal the practical applications of this word capitulate. God began to show me areas of my life in which I had not totally surrendered. These areas not surrendered, as you will see, are really areas of insecurity filled with false security.

There are a few phrases which came into my spirit which actually define these areas of insecurity. Phrases like "just in case", or "security blanket", or "ace in the hole" are key descriptions in describing my insecurities. Total abandonment or capitulation to God requires that these areas of our lives be discerned and totally surrendered. An Ace in the Hole is a slang expression meaning a secret or extra asset to assure success, referring to the ace playing card a player has as a hole card (or face down card) in a game of stud poker.

PROBLEM WITH FAILURE TO CAPITULATE

We move into God with insensitivity and a passiveness when we think we have an ace in the hole. With an ace in the hole so to speak there is no genuine incentive for abandonment. The attitude becomes "Whatever! if things do not work out to my satisfaction then I will draw out my ace in the hole." Questions may arise like, "What if I abandon all and It doesn't work?"

WHAT ARE MY ACES IN THE HOLE?

-My ministry abilities. Though called to ministry and gifted, these gifts can be misused for the gratification of the flesh when not orchestrated by the spirit of God.

-Revelation knowledge; knowledge and truth without love does not work the righteousness of God.

-Attempting to build God's house in my own abilities or charismatic character. Scripture says that except the Lord build the house, those who labor, labor in vain.

-Friendships or relationships; seeking the honor of people as opposed to the honor of God destroys one's faith. If we have the honor of God, we have all of the provisions needed to fulfill God's will.

-My job - my ability to survey land; I must know that God is my provider, and that it is not my ability to survey, which will provide my finances.

These are just a few of the "things" in which I might falsely find security. These "aces" in the hole become real soul ties which separate me from total abandonment into a full identity with God.

SOUL TIES - BOTH GOOD AND BAD

A soul tie is a covenant. There are holy soul ties and there are evil soul ties. The soul is always tied or knitted to something or someone. If my soul is in covenant with Godly things then my soul is Godly. If my soul is in covenant with evil things then my soul is evil.

Evil soul ties often provide us with a false security. It never ceases to amaze me how the soul of man can so easily and readily be appeased by evil entities. Real peace only comes when our soul is tied to the kingdom of God. Abandonment to the New Covenant promises of God is the only real place of peace.

FRUIT OF FAILURE TO CAPITULATE

(The following list may be found on the labels of some medicine containers.) Insanity, double-mindedness, insecurity, confusion, frustration, inability to focus, anger, bitterness at God and others, hopelessness, despair, loss of vision, all of the works of the flesh and finally physical demise - weakness, sickness and death.

The Apostle James vividly describes this whole scenario of double-mindedness. (See James >)

Paul writes about the wretchedness of a double mind. (Romans 7,8)

SECURITY AND GODLY CAPITULATION IN THE LOVE OF GOD

Could this command of surrender or capitulation have anything to do with the understanding of the love of God? I personally believe that it has everything to do with our understanding of the love of God. True security only comes from knowing the love of our Heavenly Father.

God loves us and calls; therefore, God will equip us to fulfill the callings. How often we are guilty of seeking love in all of the wrong places. Only in the boldness of God's love are we empowered to fulfill the call of God for our lives.

Because of my encounter with the word capitulate, I too have been emboldened to continue to capitulate or surrender to God. As I exercise in God's grace, my mandate to capitulate, the rest of God fills my soul with peace.

Prayer: Father, grant to us the grace to capitulate. Grant us the grace to see that surrender is not a work of labor but a labor of your work in us. We are free Lord and we graciously thank you. Amen.

In His Grace
